For Aston Martin, side mirrors of the future could be a combination of old and new technology.
The British automaker, along with mirror supplier Gentex Corp., has developed a system that combines aspects of traditional side mirrors with new camera monitoring systems.
Aston Martin and Gentex’s collaboration, installed on a prototype DBS Superleggera, uses three cameras — one in each exterior side mirror and one that’s roof-mounted. The camera feeds are displayed in multiple views on the rearview display inside the vehicle.
To maximize the view coming in for the feed, the automaker increased the size of the glass on the side mirrors. Yet the overall size of the mirror head is smaller than the mirrors on a DB11, said Daryl Wiseman, body engineering manager at Aston Martin. The setup is viewed as a prototype.
“We can pick it up and put it onto an appropriate vehicle at a point in time in the future,” he said.
Although some European and Asian countries allow camera monitoring systems to replace traditional mirrors, U.S. and Canadian safety rules require vehicles to have an inside mirror, as well as an outside driver-side mirror.
Wiseman said the automaker developed the system to be legally compliant on a global scale.
“We believe this is the way we’ll be going forward while there are still mirrors on an Aston Martin,” Wiseman said. “We believe this is the way it’ll look.”
